## How to convert an image to WebP

1. **Upload your images.** Drag them into the window or click “Browse files”. The converter handles JPG, PNG, BMP and static GIF, dozens of files at once.
2. **Set the quality.** The default quality of 80 suits most websites. Choose 85 to 90 for a portfolio, or 70 for previews.
3. **Convert and download.** The “Convert” button processes the whole batch, download the finished WebP files one by one or as a ZIP.

## Why convert images to WebP

[WebP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP) is a format from Google designed for the web. According to a [Google study](https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/docs/webp_study), lossy WebP files are 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEG at the same quality, and lossless ones are roughly 26 percent smaller than PNG. Smaller images mean faster page loading, better Core Web Vitals scores and less data used on mobile.

WebP also supports transparency unlike JPG, so it can replace a PNG with a transparent background too. It is now [supported by every common browser](https://caniuse.com/webp), including Safari from version 14.

## What else the WebP converter can do

### A savings estimate before you convert

In the technical details you will find “Estimate from a sample”: the converter encodes a downscaled sample of the selected image and works out how large the WebP file will be at the chosen setting, how large a JPEG would be at the same quality, and how many percent you will save. You immediately see whether converting is worth it.

### HTML code with a fallback format

The converter prepares ready made code for the `<picture>` element: browsers that support WebP load the new file, others get the original JPG or PNG. The code also includes the image dimensions and lazy loading, just copy it into your template. ### A magnifier at 100 percent

Click into the preview to move the magnifier anywhere and compare the original with the result pixel by pixel. Artefacts from [lossy compression](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_compression) show up first in text, edges and smooth gradients, worth checking there.

### Transparency stays intact

A PNG with a transparent background converts to WebP without losing the alpha channel. If the target application cannot handle transparency, turn on “Flatten transparency onto a colour”.

### Protection against a bad result

The converter rejects an animated GIF, because only the first frame would silently remain. When a converted file comes out larger than the original, which happens with images that are already well compressed, the table flags it and one click keeps the original.

### Resizing, renaming, no metadata

In “Advanced options” you can resize images by their longest side in pixels or by percentage, and rename them all at once using `{name}`, `{width}`, `{height}` and `{index}`. Conversion removes EXIF, ICC and GPS data, so photos do not reveal their location. ### How do I convert JPG to WebP?

Upload your JPG files, keep the quality at 80 or adjust it, and click "Convert". WebP tends to be a quarter to a third smaller at the same visual quality. The estimate in the technical details shows how much a specific photo will save.

### How do I convert PNG to WebP and keep transparency?

Just upload and convert the PNG, transparency stays intact automatically. If you want to remove it instead, turn on "Flatten transparency onto a colour".

### Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes, every current browser, including Safari from version 14. For older devices, use the HTML code with the `<picture>` element that the converter prepares, an older browser then loads the original JPG or PNG.

### Is WebP better than JPG?

For the web, yes: at the same quality it is smaller and supports transparency. JPG still opens in more programs, printers and authorities. Use WebP on the web, and JPG for sharing and printing.

### Why did the converter reject my GIF?

An animated GIF would silently turn into a single static frame during conversion. To avoid a surprising result, the converter rejects it. Static GIFs convert without any problem.

### Are my images uploaded to a server?
