## How to convert an image to PNG

1. **Upload your images.** Drag them into the window or click “Browse files”. The converter handles JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG, even dozens of files at once.
2. **Choose your settings.** The defaults work for an ordinary conversion. “Advanced options” holds palette reduction, transparency handling and the SVG width.
3. **Check the preview.** Click into the “Reference preview” to move the magnifier and compare the original with the result at 100 percent.
4. **Convert and download.** Download the finished PNGs one by one or all together as a ZIP.

## What else the PNG converter can do

### A smaller PNG through a limited palette

[PNG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics) stores an image [losslessly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossless_compression), so it tends to be needlessly large for photos. Screenshots, logos, icons and charts, however, contain only a few dozen shades. Turn on “Reduce the colour palette” and set the number of colours from 2 to 256, the default is 64. The converter picks the colours that dominate the image, and the file often shrinks to a fraction of its size while the screen shows no difference. How many colours an image really needs depends on its [colour depth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth).

### SVG to PNG at any width

Vector [SVG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics) has no fixed size in pixels. In “SVG rasterisation width (px)” enter a width from 16 to 8192 px, and the height is calculated from the aspect ratio. From a single logo you can prepare a sharp PNG for the web, a presentation and print.

### Clean transparent edges

PNG keeps the [alpha channel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_compositing), so a transparent background stays transparent. Some editors, however, bake white into semi transparent edges, and on a dark background a light fringe then glows around the object. “Remove the white fringe on transparent edges” subtracts white from these pixels so the edge stays clean. If you want to remove transparency instead, turn on “Flatten transparency onto a colour” and pick white, black or a custom colour.

A transparent background does not appear from an ordinary photo just by converting it, PNG only knows how to save one. ### A warning about a needlessly large file

A photo converted from JPG to PNG usually comes out several times larger, because PNG does not compress lossily. The converter flags files that come out larger than the original in the table, and one click keeps the original. ### Resizing, renaming and removing metadata

Resize images by their longest side in pixels or by percentage, and rename them all at once using `{name}`, `{width}`, `{height}` and `{index}`. Conversion also removes EXIF metadata, the ICC profile and GPS coordinates, so photos lose the location where they were taken.

## Supported formats

- **JPG to PNG:** when you need a lossless copy for further editing or a program that will not accept JPG. Conversion cannot restore quality JPG has already lost.
- **WebP to PNG:** images downloaded from the web, for editors and programs without WebP support. Transparency stays intact.
- **SVG to PNG:** a vector converted to a bitmap at a width you choose.
- **GIF to PNG:** only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted.
- **BMP to PNG:** the same quality, a much smaller file.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Upload your JPG files and click "Convert". The result has the same quality as the original JPG, just in a lossless format, so further edits will not lose anything more. Expect a PNG made from a photo to be larger than the JPG.

### How do I convert SVG to PNG?

Upload your SVG, set "SVG rasterisation width (px)" in "Advanced options", for example 1024 or 2048, and convert. The height is calculated from the aspect ratio and a transparent background stays intact.

### How do I make a PNG file smaller?

Turn on "Reduce the colour palette" and try 64 colours or fewer. For screenshots and logos this usually shrinks the file to a fraction of its size. Reducing the dimensions by the longest side in pixels helps too. Photos are better saved as JPG or WebP.

### Does converting to PNG keep a transparent background?

### Why is my PNG bigger than the original JPG?
