# Background Remover

Tools are interactive browser apps; there is no public API, no endpoints to call and no server-side processing. To use a tool, open its HTML page in a browser.

If your product photo, headshot, or logo sits on a flat, even background — a studio white, a green screen, a plain wall — you don’t need Photoshop or a subscription to strip it out. This tool does one specific job well: pick a color, and it removes every pixel close enough to that color, leaving a transparent PNG.

## What this actually does

This is a color-keying tool, not an object-detection AI. It looks at the color you click on (or pick manually), and removes every pixel within a tolerance range of that color. That’s the whole mechanism — no model, no server call, no black box.

That constraint is also the tool’s strength for the right job: a product shot on seamless white, a logo on a solid fill, a chroma-key green screen. For those, color keying is faster and more predictable than AI segmentation, which can leave soft, slightly-off edges around hair or fine detail. For a busy or gradient background with a complex subject, this tool won’t help — you’d need actual segmentation, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than fake it.

## Why it’s fully local

Everything — reading the pixels, computing color distance, feathering the edges — happens in a `<canvas>` element in your own browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere, because there’s nowhere for it to go: there’s no backend behind this tool. Close the tab and the image is gone. You can verify this yourself: open dev tools (F12), go to the Network tab, and process an image — you’ll see zero requests.

## Using it

1. **Upload** a PNG, JPG, or WebP.
2. **Click the color** you want to remove directly on the image, or pick it manually from the color swatch.
3. **Adjust tolerance** — how far from the exact color counts as “the same.” Too low and you’ll leave a fringe; too high and you’ll eat into your subject.
4. **Feather the edge** slightly (1–3px is usually enough) so the cutout doesn’t look jagged.
5. **Download** as PNG — the only format that preserves transparency. (If you download as JPG, the “empty” area gets filled with solid white or black, since JPG has no alpha channel.)

## Where a transparent PNG is actually useful

- **Marketplace listings** (Amazon, eBay, Etsy): most require a pure white or transparent product background.
- **Logos in slide decks or docs**: a logo with no white box behind it sits naturally on any background color.
- **Stickers for chat apps**: WhatsApp and Telegram stickers need transparency to not look like little rectangles.
- **Thumbnails**: cutting a subject out and placing it against a different background is a common YouTube thumbnail technique.

## FAQ

### Does this use AI?

No. This is a deterministic color-distance algorithm running in JavaScript on a canvas — not a machine learning model. That's a deliberate choice: it means the tool is fast, works offline, and never sends your image anywhere.

### Why doesn't it work well on my photo?

Color keying only works when the background is a reasonably flat, distinct color from the subject. Busy backgrounds, gradients, or a subject that shares colors with the background (e.g. blonde hair on a beige wall) will give a messy result — that's a limitation of the method, not a bug.

### Is it really free and private?

Yes — there's no account, no upload, no watermark. The processing cost is your device's CPU for a fraction of a second, not a server we'd need to pay for, which is why we don't need to charge for it.

### Does it work on mobile?

Yes, it's fully responsive and runs the same local canvas logic on phones.
