Common Mistakes: Why is 1 hour and 30 minutes not 1.30?

The biggest trick when calculating with time is that time doesn’t work in the standard decimal system we’re used to (where 100 is a whole), but in a sexagesimal (base-60) system.

Practical Example: If you want to enter “an hour and a half” into the calculator, you might be tempted to write 1.30 (as 1 h and 30 min). However, this is a mathematical error.

• Correct: 1 hour and 30 minutes = 1.5 hours.
• Why? Because 30 minutes is exactly half (50%) of an hour.
