Shoe size converter for US, EU, UK, Japanese, Australian and Brazilian sizes, foot length in centimetres and inches and Mondopoint, with separate scales for men, women and children. Enter the size you know, or measure your foot on the screen: the built-in ruler is calibrated with a payment card, so the length it shows is real centimetres, not a guess. The second tab converts clothing sizes between US, UK, European, Italian, French, Japanese and Korean labels and finds your size from bust, chest, waist or hip measurements. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use the shoe size converter: US to EU, UK and cm
- Choose Sizes for: Men, Women or Children. The UK and US scales differ between the three, so a women’s 8 and a men’s 8 are different shoes.
- In I know pick the system of the size you have: EU, UK, US, Foot length (cm), Foot length (inches), Mondopoint, KR (mm), JP, CN (cm), AU, NZ or BR.
- Type the Size. Half sizes work as 9.5, 9,5 or 9 1/2.
- Shoe sizes lists every system at once with the foot length the size is made for. The row you typed is highlighted, and each value has a Copy button.
A men’s EU 42 comes out as UK 8.5, US 9.5, 26.7 cm of foot, Mondopoint 265 and JP 26.5. A women’s US 8 is UK 6, EU 39 and a 24.6 cm foot. A child’s foot of 15 cm takes EU 24.5, UK 7.5 and US 8. The Size chart below the converter is a full shoe size chart: it prints the whole scale of the chosen group in 5 mm steps, so you can look up a size without typing.
Shoe size chart in cm and the formulas behind the shoe size converter
Every system here is derived from the length of the foot, which is the only measurement that is the same in every country. The formulas are the ones documented for each system (see Shoe size on Wikipedia and ISO 19407):
| System | Rule | Foot of 27 cm |
|---|---|---|
| EU | 1.5 × foot in cm + 2 (Paris points, last is 2 points longer than the foot) | 42.5 |
| UK | 3 × foot in inches − 23 (barleycorns of 1/3 inch); children 3 × inches − 10 | 9 |
| US men | UK + 1 | 10 |
| US women | UK + 2 (FIA scale) | 11 |
| US children | 3 × inches − 9.75 | |
| Mondopoint, KR | foot length in mm, 5 mm steps (ISO 9407) | 270 |
| JP, CN | foot length in cm, 5 mm steps (JIS S 5037, GB/T 3293) | 27 |
| AU, NZ | UK for men and children, US for women | 9 |
| BR | EU − 2 | 40.5 |
Because the result is calculated and not copied from a chart, half sizes come out right and every size shows the range of foot lengths it fits: a men’s EU 42 fits a foot of about 26.5 to 26.8 cm. Shoes are made around a last that is longer than the foot, which is why an EU size is not simply 1.5 times the foot length and why a 27 cm foot wears a size marked 27 in Japan but 42.5 in Europe.
Women’s US sizes are the one place where the industry does not agree. The FIA scale used here puts women one size above men, so men’s 9 equals women’s 10. Nike and some other brands add 1.5 instead, which makes their women’s size half a number larger. The note under the result reminds you of this when you convert women’s shoes. Children’s UK and US scales run from 0 to 13.5 and then start again at 1 on the adult scale; the converter marks those values as adult scale, and the chart does the same with an asterisk.
Measure foot size at home with the screen ruler
Most shoe size charts assume you already know a size. If you only have a foot, open Screen ruler: measure the foot or insole. Screens have different pixel densities, so a ruler drawn on a web page is wrong until it is calibrated. Under Calibrate the screen hold a payment card to the outline and move the Scale slider, or press the Smaller and Larger buttons, until the outline matches the long edge of the card. Every bank card follows the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 format and is 85.6 mm wide, which makes it a reference you always have at hand. If you prefer, line up the 10 cm mark with a real ruler. The setting is saved on this device, so you calibrate once.
The ruler below it then shows true millimetres. Put the heel end of a shoe insole, a strip of paper cut to your foot length, or the foot itself against the zero mark and drag the marker to the toe. The Measured length updates as you drag, the arrow keys move the marker by a millimetre and Shift by a centimetre, and Use as foot length sends the value straight into the converter. A laptop or monitor shows 30 cm or more; a phone shows around 7 cm in portrait, so turn it sideways or measure the insole in two steps from the zero mark.
To measure a foot without a screen, stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of the longest toe, and measure from the edge of the paper to the mark. Measure both feet in the evening, when they are largest, and convert the longer one. For children add about half a size for growth, and check the width as well: Mondopoint labels such as 270/105 give length and width in millimetres, and a wide foot may need a size up in a narrow shoe.
Clothing size converter: women, men and children
The Clothing tab converts clothing sizes and, more usefully, finds a size from body measurements, because the national numbers describe the same body: a US 6 dress is a UK 10, DE 36, FR 38, IT 42 and JP 11, all cut for a bust of 86 to 89 cm, a waist of 69 to 72 cm and hips of 95 to 97 cm.
- Dresses, tops and blouses (women): International letters, US, UK, DE, AT, NL, Nordic, FR, BE, ES, PT, IT and JP, with bust, waist and hip in centimetres.
- Jackets, suits and sweaters (men): EU 44 to 64, US chest in inches, KR and the letter size. A European 50 is a US 40 and an M, for a chest of 98 to 101 cm.
- Shirts by collar (men): collar in centimetres and inches, 41 cm is 16 1/4 in.
- Trousers and jeans by waist (men): waist in inches and centimetres and the Italian number, a 34 waist is 86 cm and IT 50.
- Children by height: European sizes are the child’s height in centimetres, shown with the approximate age and the US size, so 128 cm is about 8 years and a US 8.
Switch I know to By body measurement, pick Bust (cm), Chest (cm), Waist (cm), Hips (cm), Height (cm) or Collar (cm) and type the measurement: a 92 cm bust gives a DE 38 and US 8. The measurement bands follow EN 13402, the European standard that labels clothes by body dimensions, and the letter sizes XS to 4XL are its chest bands. Brands still cut differently, especially in women’s fashion where vanity sizing has moved the numbers over the decades, so treat the result as the starting point and check the brand’s own chart for a close fit. Measure the bust and chest at the fullest point with the tape horizontal, the waist at the narrowest point and the hips at the widest.
The sister tools in Converters handle the measurements themselves: the length converter turns inches into centimetres for a foot measured with an imperial tape, and the weight converter helps with the weight-based sizes used for infants.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert US shoe size to EU?
Choose the group (men or women), set I know to US and type the size. For men EU is roughly US + 32.5 plus a little, for women about US + 31: a men's US 9.5 is EU 42, a women's US 8 is EU 39. The exact value depends on the foot length behind the size, which the converter shows with every result.
What is my shoe size in cm?
Convert your size with the converter and read Foot length in the result, or measure your foot with the screen ruler. EU 42 corresponds to a foot of about 26.7 cm, EU 38 to 24 cm. Japanese and Chinese sizes are the foot length in centimetres directly, so a JP 25.5 is a 25.5 cm foot.
How do I convert shoe sizes from men to women?
On the FIA scale used by most US charts, add 1 to the men's size: men's 9 is women's 10. Nike and some other brands add 1.5. UK sizes use one scale for both, and EU, Japanese and Mondopoint sizes do not change at all, because they measure the foot and not the wearer.
How do I convert kids' shoe sizes?
Choose Children. UK and US children's sizes run from 0 to 13.5 and then restart at 1 on the adult scale, EU and Japanese sizes simply continue. A 15 cm foot is EU 24.5, UK 7.5 and US 8; a 22 cm foot is EU 35 and UK 3 on the adult scale. Children's feet grow about half a size every few months, so measure before every purchase.
Can I measure my foot with my phone?
Yes, with limits. Calibrate the screen ruler with a payment card, then hold the phone sideways: a typical phone shows about 14 cm in landscape, enough for a child's foot or for measuring an insole in two steps from the zero mark. For an adult foot a laptop, monitor or tablet is more comfortable, or use the paper method described above and type the length as Foot length (cm).
Why do shoes of the same size fit differently?
A size is derived from the last the shoe was made on, and lasts differ in toe room, width and shape. Two brands can label the same last 42 and 43, and a sports shoe often runs half a size smaller than a leather shoe. The foot length shown here is the measurement to compare with the brand's own chart, and Mondopoint labels, which state the foot length in millimetres, are the most reliable of all.
