Options
Convert Markdown to PDF, Word, HTML or plain text with this Markdown converter that runs right in your browser: paste the text or open a .md file, pick the format and download the result. It also turns Markdown tables into Excel or CSV files, builds EPUB e-books and LaTeX documents, and rewrites Markdown for Jira, Confluence, Slack and forum BBCode. The preview next to the text shows the result while you adjust the settings. Your files are not uploaded anywhere, there is no sign up, no watermark and no page limit.
How to convert a Markdown file
- Paste Markdown into the left field, or click Open files and choose one or more .md files. Dropping files onto the converter works too.
- Choose the format under Convert to. Documents are PDF, Word (DOCX), EPUB, LaTeX, HTML and Text (TXT), Tables are Excel (XLSX) and CSV, and For apps are Jira / Confluence, Slack and BBCode.
- Check the Result preview and, if you like, change the page size, margins, font or other settings under Options.
- Edit the File name if needed and click the download button. Text formats can also be copied straight to the clipboard, and for Jira, Slack and BBCode copying is the main button.
The converter starts with a sample quarterly report that has a title in its front matter, lists, a table with right aligned numbers, a task list, a quote, a code block and a footnote. Convert it to each format to see how the elements come out.
Markdown to PDF converter
The PDF is built in your browser with real, selectable text, not a screenshot of the page. Headings appear as bookmarks in the side panel of your PDF reader, links stay clickable, and links to headings or footnotes jump inside the document. Tables keep their column alignment and repeat the header row on every page they span, nested lists are numbered 1., a., i. like in Word, and task lists get drawn checkboxes. Code blocks use a monospaced font on a light grey background, so indentation stays exactly as written.
Under Options you choose the Page size (A4 or Letter, preselected from your browser language), the Margins (narrow 1.27 cm, normal 2.54 cm or wide 3.81 cm, which is 0.5, 1 or 1.5 inches), a serif or sans serif Font, the Font size and whether to print Page numbers. Table of contents adds a list of headings with page numbers after the title.
The fonts travel inside the PDF, so it looks the same on every computer and printer. They cover Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese, plus arrows, math signs and symbols like → ≤ ✓ ★. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Indic scripts and emoji are not included. When the document uses them, the converter names the characters and the download button changes to Save as PDF: it opens your browser’s print dialog, which uses the fonts of your system and writes Arabic and Hebrew from right to left. Choose Save as PDF as the printer and the page size, margins and font from Options are kept.
Convert Markdown to Word (DOCX)
The Word file is a real document structure, not just text that looks like it. Headings use the built in styles Heading 1 to Heading 6, so the navigation pane in Word lists them and References, Table of Contents builds a contents page in one click. Lists are proper Word lists that keep numbering when you add items, each numbered list starts again at 1 (or at the number you wrote), and task items get ☐ and ☒. Tables repeat their header row on each page, footnotes become real Word footnotes at the bottom of the page, and links to headings jump to them.
Pick the page size, margins, font size and one of the standard fonts Calibri, Cambria, Arial or Times New Roman. Word shows the file in the font installed on the computer that opens it, so the preview here is a close guide rather than a pixel exact copy. The .docx opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice and other programs that read the Office Open XML format. To get Markdown into Google Docs, upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, or paste it with Copy as rich text from the Markdown editor.
Markdown to HTML
Complete page with styles gives you a standalone .html file with its own clean stylesheet. It works offline, follows the light or dark mode of the reader’s system and prints well. Body only, for a CMS gives just the HTML elements (<h2>, <p>, <ul>, <table> and so on) without any styles, ready to paste into WordPress, Ghost, a newsletter tool or your own template. Switch the preview between Rendered and Code to see both sides.
The HTML follows CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown. Headings get id attributes like on GitHub, so #release-plan links keep working, and footnotes come with links back to where they were cited. Scripts, event handlers and javascript: links are removed from any raw HTML in the source, so a Markdown file from someone else cannot sneak code into your page.
Markdown to plain text
Text (TXT) removes the Markdown syntax and keeps the structure readable: bullets become ”- ”, numbered items keep their numbers, tasks show as [ ] and [x], quotes start with ”> ”, tables are lined up in columns and footnotes are listed as [1], [2] at the end. Keep link addresses writes the URL in brackets after each link, so nothing is lost when the text goes into an email, a form field or a system that does not understand Markdown. Line length can wrap long lines at 72 or 80 characters for plain text email.
This is also handy for answers from AI chat tools, which come in Markdown: converting them to text removes the asterisks and hash signs before you paste them somewhere else.
Markdown table to Excel and CSV
Excel (XLSX) and CSV take only the tables out of the document, which is handy for tables in README files, documentation or answers from AI chat tools. In Excel every table becomes its own sheet named after the heading above it. Numbers are stored as real numbers, including thousands separators such as 1,240 and percentages such as 12%, so you can sum and sort them straight away, while values like 007 or a postal code keep their leading zeros as text. The header row is bold and frozen, and every sheet gets a filter.
CSV writes one file per table, and more tables are packed into a ZIP. Under Options you pick the Separator: Excel set to a language with a decimal comma, such as German or French, expects a semicolon, otherwise the whole row lands in one column. Excel compatible (UTF-8 with BOM) makes Excel read accents and other characters correctly. Copy tables puts the tables on the clipboard so you can paste them into Excel or Google Sheets without saving a file.
Markdown to Jira, Confluence, Slack and BBCode
These three formats are text for apps that do not read standard Markdown, so the main button copies the result:
- Jira / Confluence writes wiki markup:
h2.headings,*bold*,_italic_,{code}blocks,||header||tables,[text|url]links and#or*lists. It is meant for Jira and Confluence Data Center or Server and for older fields that still use wiki markup. The current editor in Jira Cloud reads Markdown itself, so there you can paste the original text. - Slack writes Slack’s own markup:
*bold*,_italic_,~strikethrough~, code, quotes and[text](url)links, with lists as bullet characters and tables as aligned code blocks, because Slack has no tables. Turn on Format messages with markup under Preferences, Advanced in Slack to see the formatting after you send. For bots and webhooks (API format) writes links as<url|text>and escapes&,<and>, as the Slack API expects. - BBCode uses the tags that phpBB, vBulletin, XenForo, SMF and MyBB all understand:
[b],[i],[u],[s],[url],[img],[quote],[list]and[code]. Headings become bold lines, since heading sizes differ from forum to forum, and tables become aligned[code]blocks.
Markdown to EPUB for e-readers and Kindle
EPUB builds an e-book with a title page, a table of contents and one chapter for each top level heading. When the document has a single heading 1 used as the title, chapters start at heading 2 instead; New chapter at under Options lets you choose. Footnotes are collected as endnotes with links back to the text, images with a web address are embedded, and the title and author from the front matter appear in the book’s details.
The files pass EPUBCheck, the official EPUB validator, so they open in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and Calibre. Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB too and converts it for your Kindle, and Kindle Direct Publishing takes EPUB manuscripts, with the cover uploaded separately.
Markdown to LaTeX
LaTeX produces a complete article document that loads only the packages it needs, or with Body only, to paste into a document just the content for a paper you already have, for example in Overleaf. Headings become \section and \subsection, lists become itemize and enumerate, tables become tabular with the column alignment kept, code goes into verbatim, footnotes become real \footnote commands and links use \href. Characters that LaTeX treats as commands, such as %, $, &, # and _, are escaped. LaTeX cannot load images from the web, so each image becomes an \includegraphics line with its file name and the original address in a comment; download the image next to the .tex file. Compile with pdfLaTeX, or with XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX for scripts other than Latin.
Convert several .md files at once
Open or drop several files and a list appears under the text field. Edit loads a file into the field so you can check or fix it, Remove takes it out of the batch, and Download all as ZIP converts every file into the chosen format with the same settings. Each file keeps its name, so notes.md becomes notes.pdf. Files that are not text, such as images, are skipped with a note.
Front matter, images and file names
Many Markdown files start with a YAML front matter block between two --- lines, as used by Jekyll, Hugo, Obsidian and other tools. The converter does not print it. Its title becomes the document title in the PDF and Word properties and in the HTML <title>, and also the suggested file name; author becomes the author. Without front matter, the first top level heading names the file.
Images with a full web address are downloaded by your browser and embedded in the PDF and Word file, as long as the server that hosts them allows it (CORS). GIF, WebP and SVG images are converted to PNG on the way.
Frequently asked questions
Are my Markdown files uploaded to a server?
No. Reading the files, building the PDF and Word documents and packing the ZIP all happen in your browser, so private notes and internal documentation never leave your computer. The converter remembers only your settings, such as the format and page size, not the text.
Why are the images missing from my PDF?
Images written as a path on your computer, such as images/chart.png, cannot be read by a web page; they are replaced by their description. Use a full https address, or put the image online first. Some websites also block other sites from loading their images, in which case the description is used too, and the converter tells you how many images it could not load.
Can I convert Markdown with Chinese, Japanese or Arabic text to PDF?
Yes, through your browser. The fonts built into the PDF do not contain those scripts, so for such a document the download button changes to Save as PDF and opens the print dialog, where you choose Save as PDF as the printer. The browser uses the fonts of your system, the text stays selectable and Arabic or Hebrew runs from right to left. Word (DOCX) and HTML keep every character as well.
Does it support LaTeX math or Mermaid diagrams?
No. Formulas written between dollar signs stay as plain text, and a Mermaid block is converted like any other code block. Tables, task lists, footnotes, code and everything else from GitHub Flavored Markdown are supported in every format.
Can I convert Word or Google Docs to Markdown?
Yes, with the Markdown editor: paste text copied from Word, Google Docs or a web page and its formatting turns into Markdown, including headings, lists, links and tables. Converting a PDF back to Markdown is not supported, because a PDF stores text placed on a page rather than headings, lists and tables.
How do I convert a Markdown table to Excel?
Paste the Markdown with the table, choose Excel (XLSX) and download the file. Every table becomes a sheet with numbers stored as numbers. If you only need the values in a spreadsheet you already have open, click Copy tables and paste into Excel or Google Sheets.
Why does Excel put a whole CSV row into one column?
Excel splits a CSV file by the list separator of your system. In languages that write decimals with a comma, such as German, French or Czech, that separator is a semicolon. Choose Semicolon under Separator and download again. If accents look wrong, keep Excel compatible (UTF-8 with BOM) switched on.
Can I send the EPUB to my Kindle?
Yes. Amazon's Send to Kindle, by email, in the Kindle app or on the Send to Kindle website, accepts EPUB files and converts them for the Kindle library. Kindle Direct Publishing also accepts EPUB if you want to publish the book.
Does Jira Cloud still use wiki markup?
Not in its current editor, which reads Markdown and turns it into formatting as you paste or type. The Jira / Confluence format is for Jira and Confluence Data Center or Server and for older fields that still show wiki markup. In Jira Cloud you can paste the original Markdown instead.
Can I open the LaTeX file in Overleaf?
Yes. Create a new blank project, upload the .tex file or paste its content, and upload any images it mentions. With Body only, to paste into a document you get just the content for a project that already has its own preamble.
How do I convert Markdown to PDF or Word from the command line?
The usual tool is Pandoc: pandoc notes.md -o notes.docx creates a Word file right away, while PDF output needs a LaTeX engine installed as well. This page needs no installation and gives you a preview first, which is easier for a single document or a quick batch.
Is there a limit on file size or the number of pages?
Each file can have up to 20 MB of text, which is far more than any normal document, and there is no page limit or watermark. Very long documents with many images take a few seconds to build, because all the work is done by your own computer.
To write or edit the Markdown first, use the Markdown editor with a live preview; its More export options button opens this converter with the text already filled in. More tools for text are in the Text category, for example the word and character counter and the tool to compare two texts.
